Why women pick the racer over the biker

Most women's leather jackets are variations on the biker: asymmetric zip, wide lapels, belt at the waist, buckles at the cuff. It's a strong look and it dominates for a reason. The cafe racer is what you buy when you want the leather without the announcement. The collar sits flat, the zip runs centre, and the shape does the work instead of the fittings.

That difference matters most on a small frame. Lapels and belts add bulk exactly where you don't want it, which is why a fitted racer often sits better than a biker jacket in the same size. It also layers flatter under a coat.

Colour is where this collection is different

Our racer runs in the widest colour range we stock. Black and cognac are the two that go with everything and get worn to death. Brown sits warmer than black against navy and grey. Red, purple, pink and green are for the second jacket, once you already own a neutral and want something that shows up in a photograph.

The rub-off and wax finishes are worth a look if you like leather that changes. Colour lifts at the seams and elbows over the first year or two, so the jacket ends up marked by how you actually wore it. New, they look good. Broken in, they look like yours.

What it goes with

Straight jeans and a plain tee is the obvious one and it never looks wrong. The racer also works over a dress in a way a heavy biker doesn't, because there's no belt cutting across the line. For colder months it goes under a longer leather coat or a wool overcoat without bunching at the shoulder.

If you want something looser, the bomber sits wider with a ribbed hem, and the trucker is boxier and buttons instead of zipping. For a shorter length, the cropped jackets stop at the waist.

Sizing and looking after it

The racer is cut close on purpose, so go by chest measurement rather than the size you usually order. The size guide lists exact measurements. If you'll wear a jumper underneath, one size up is enough. Returns are free for 30 days, so start with the size you measure into.

Lambskin asks for very little. Keep it away from direct heat, let it air dry on its own, condition it once or twice a year and it will hold up for years. The care guide has the detail.
